Four years later than originally planned, the rocket is scheduled to launch from the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, on Tuesday at 8 p.m. (CEST). Europe’s space program hopes that the maiden flight will allow satellites to access space again and put the crisis in its launch vehicle sector behind it.
The Ariane 6 is the successor to the Ariane 5, which was in use from 1996 to summer 2023. It is designed to launch satellites into space for commercial and public clients and is significantly cheaper than its predecessor.
After France, Germany is the most important ESA country to fund Ariane 6, contributing around 20 percent of the funding. The rocket’s upper stage is being assembled at the ArianeGroup space company’s Bremen plant. The main stage is being built in the French town of Les Mureaux.
