The position of the Broad Front (FA) With respect to plebiscite against social security reform proposed by the PIT-CNT has been the talk of the town since the campaign to carry out the constitutional amendment was launched; however, even after the signatures were validated, the left-wing coalition still does not have a unified position on the matter.
Meanwhile he National Party (PN) defends tooth and nail the social security reform approved in April last year, the Broad Front is in a dilemma as to whether or not to support, in a unified manner, the proposal of the trade union center. In this way, the senator and campaign manager for the Broad Front in view of the general elections in October, Alejandro Sanchez, He commented on the situation of the left-wing party.
“It is a great challenge for the Frente Amplio campaign because it was decided to go to this plebiscite with freedom of action. This means that there are sectors and colleagues who support the reform and sectors and colleagues who do not support the reform,” he assured Radio Sarandí.
Regarding the public demand from the political sector for the front to take a position, Sánchez admitted that they are in a dilemma. “We are in an uncomfortable situation because, on the one hand, we have the government that supports its reform and puts it before the PIT-CNT and on the other hand, this Broad Front which puts itself in a different position from that of the government and the PIT-CNT”, He commented and added that the FA does not share the union’s ballot because of the content it contains.

Meanwhile, the campaign manager clearly positioned himself against the plebiscite. “Who is going to be against increasing minimum pensions? But not in the way that is proposed there,” said Sánchez. “That is why we proposed a social dialogue from the Frente Amplio that incorporates elements into the debate to be able to resolve positively in order to be able to reverse some modifications that are bad in the government reform,” he added.
As an example, Sánchez cited the problem that arose when the retirement age was raised and explained the need to return to 60 years, based on other cases around the world where the modifications did not work because people did not meet the requirements and ended up retiring with the minimum. “We have to try to return to 60 years and generate incentives for people to continue in the labor market,” he said.
Lacalle Pou will campaign against the plebiscite
President Luis Lacalle Pou confirmed that he will campaign in favor of the social security reform, after the Electoral Court has approved the necessary signatures for the plebiscite against him.
In this way, the president will lead the campaign to prevent the approval of the plebiscite against the social security reform. According to the president, there are two essential things that he will defend, reported El País.
On the one hand, the fact that the system is put into play by not being able to guarantee a medium-term financing and, on the other hand, that there was indeed dialogue between the parties involved before launching the project and approving it.
Meanwhile, last week at the Legislative Palace, the coalition candidates signed a commitment against the Constitutional reform proposed by the PIT-CNT promoted by the candidate of the Independent Party and former minister of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) Pablo Mieres.
