The perpetrators send fake emails from the online financial services company BitPanda and ask customers of the platform, where cryptocurrencies can be traded, to verify their personal data.
Customers are also contacted over the phone and asked to provide alleged TAN codes that they had previously sent via SMS.
However, this does not result in any verification; the perpetrators only want to gain access to the crypto wallets, warns the Upper Austrian State Police Directorate. There have already been several reports, some of which have involved very high amounts of damage.
Experts warn: “Never give out personal information over the phone or by email!” If a mishap does occur, contact the bank or financial service provider immediately and have the account blocked and report it to the police.
