After lightning strike: 61-year-old falls to his death on the Donnerkogel in front of his son

It was supposed to be a joint climbing tour. The two holidaymakers from Hungary chose the Intersport via ferrata on the Donnerkogel. This was nothing new for the 25-year-old – but it was his father’s first via ferrata tour.

They took the Gosaukammbahn cable car to the Zwieselalm and then started the via ferrata around midday. The police said they were aware that storms and thunderstorms were forecast, but they hadn’t expected them until 3 p.m. The two climbers must have been surprised when a thunderstorm cell broke out over them at around 1:30 p.m.
