According to a US study, the weight-loss injections Wegovy and Ozempic are the treatment of choice for most overweight people only for a very limited period of time: only one in four patients who were prescribed the drugs from the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk was still injecting them two years later.
Reasons for the withdrawal were not given. “Nobody really knows how long you should take these drugs,” said Walid Gellad of the University of Pittsburgh. The study examined the data of 3,364 people with health insurance who took GLP-1 drugs. They had been prescribed the drugs between January and December 2021 because of a diagnosis of obesity or a body mass index (BMI) of at least 30. The drugs were originally developed to control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. They suppress appetite.
Last year, a study also found that about two-thirds of patients stopped taking the medication after a year. Doctors say some stop taking the medication once they have successfully lost weight. The cost also plays a role: the medication can cost more than $1,000 a month. Other studies show that most people who stop taking the medication regain most of their weight.
