The attacker also attacked a 43-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man on Meiselstrasse in Vienna-Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus and stole two bags, reported the Vienna State Police Directorate. Passers-by alerted the police at 12:10 a.m., who arrested the suspect not far from the crime scene.

The 43-year-old and the 39-year-old were taken to a trauma room by the emergency services with serious injuries. “The 51-year-old had to be ventilated and intubated,” a spokesperson for the emergency services told APA. He is currently in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
According to the police, the suspect is a Serb. The background to his attack was still completely unclear on Tuesday morning, as the state police directorate told APA. It was also not yet clear whether the man might be suffering from a mental illness.
During the operation, officers also seized the hammer, the suspected murder weapon, and the two stolen bags. The questioning of the victims and the 29-year-old is still pending. The Serb is in police custody. The Vienna State Criminal Police Office, West Branch, has taken over the investigation.
