Trisomy 21, autism spectrum disorder, neurological impairments: families with a disabled child often have a hard time. A ray of hope in this situation is the “Pulvermühlstrasse Holistic Support Center” in Linz: “The children learn there how to master their lives despite their disabilities,” says pediatrician and medical director Uli Holzmüller. The doctor is already retired, but the center is her passion project.
Therapies are free
She has been caring for girls and boys for 25 years. 80 percent of them have a mental disability, many have multiple disabilities. The patients, aged between six months and 18 years, receive therapy free of charge. The team includes 36 therapists – from physiotherapists and occupational therapists to psychologists, elementary teachers and social workers. More than a hundred children receive individual and professional support.
The aim is to improve not only the lives of the children, but also those of the parents. “85 percent of the mothers are divorced. It becomes particularly difficult when the patients turn 18 – then there are only a few places where they can go. The mothers often have to be there for their adult children 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” says Holzmüller.
Once a year, the girls and boys from the “Pulvermühlstrasse Holistic Support Center” can show what they can do at the summer festival. “You can also take this opportunity to look around the facility; everyone who is interested is warmly invited,” says Holzmüller.
