Busy crowds at the Tafel OÖ and Red Cross markets even in summer

No summer break in the social markets

After a short break from the heat yesterday, temperatures are now approaching the 30-degree mark again. A refreshing drink often works wonders now – also for customers of the various social markets in the region, who can buy food there at reduced prices. “But syrup, juices and mineral water are actually always very popular with us,” says Karin Korntner, who is responsible for coordinating the Red Cross markets in Grieskirchen and Peuerbach.

In general, a lot of customers are coming at the moment, says the Red Cross employee: “In the last three weeks in particular, the rush has been quite large.” The drinks mentioned are among the product groups that are donated less often by shops. “They are probably in high demand in regular sales, which is why they come to us less often,” says Korntner.

These goods are also very popular at the Tafel Oberösterreich, which operates social markets in Wels and Rohrbach, says chairman Erwin Hehenberger: “There is also a great demand for energy drinks – that is not our focus when looking for donations, but people are very happy. They always sell out immediately.”

Many donation options

Customers’ shopping habits change in the summer, says Hehenberger: “Normally we are very busy until 4 or 5 p.m. But at the moment there is very little going on after 2 p.m.” This is also evident in the social kitchen that the food bank runs.

Both the Red Cross markets and the food bank are constantly looking for donations – in the form of goods, but also food vouchers or cash. “With the vouchers we can buy the goods that we rarely receive as donations,” explains Korntner. The cash at the Red Cross markets goes towards the operating costs and thus towards maintaining the range of services.

Not only goods, but also voluntary help is needed, says Erwin Hehenberger: “We are happy about everyone who supports us with their time and commitment.”

Information about the various donation options is available on the websites of the Red Cross markets and the food bank on the Internet.
