Protected by mom: Gorilla baby not yet visible to visitors

As reported, the little gorilla boy did not have the easiest start in life. It was the first birth for mom Kibibi, and she was initially a little overwhelmed with the screaming baby. The zoo team had to step in and take over the care of the offspring. The gorilla mom has now got her baby back and is lovingly caring for it, according to Schmiding Zoo.

Visitors must continue to be patient

The young animal currently has no name, and the decision is expected to be made in the next few days. It is also not yet clear when the little gorilla will be available for visitors to see. “The mother is currently so protective that she doesn’t want to go out,” says zoo spokeswoman Daniela Artmann. They don’t want to put additional stress on the young family by forcing them into the new enclosure: “The gorillas should decide for themselves when they want to show themselves.” But zoo employees are also seeing very little of the baby at the moment. The mother always holds it close to her and turns her back to the employees.

Nevertheless, people in Schmiding are happy that the gorilla mother is now treating her baby so lovingly after initial problems. The gorilla offspring is the first ever to be born in Austria. The little one can now grow up with the family in Schmiding. He will only be moved to another zoo when he is an adult. But that will not happen for at least five years, when he is considered a young adult.
