Allegations of abuse against French priest Abbé Pierre

This was announced by the international social movement Emmaus in Paris, founded by Abbé Pierre. An investigation was commissioned after there was evidence last year that a woman had been abused by the highly revered priest during his lifetime.

Seven women testified

“As part of this study, testimonies were collected from seven women who reported behavior that could indicate sexual assault or sexual harassment by Abbé Pierre between the late 1970s and 2005,” Emmaus said. One of the women was a minor at the time of the first attacks. The attacks affected employees, volunteers and young women from Abbé Pierre’s personal environment.

Probably more affected

According to the study, it is reasonable to assume that there are other victims, the number of whom is difficult to estimate, Emmaus said. An anonymous contact point will be set up for other possible victims of abuse and witnesses of abusive behavior by Abbé Pierre. In addition, further educational work will be carried out.

The abuse allegations are a major shock in France, where Abbé Pierre topped the list of the most popular French people for many years. “These revelations shake our structures, in which the figure of Abbé Pierre occupies an important place,” said Emmaus. “Each of us knows his story and his message. These actions profoundly change the way we look at a man who is known above all for his fight against poverty, misery and exclusion.”

Bishops’ Conference expresses deep condolences

France’s Catholic Bishops’ Conference also expressed its concern about the allegations. It expressed its deepest sympathy to those affected and its shame that a priest could do such a thing. It said it was determined to make the church a place where everyone can feel safe.

Abbé Pierre became the social conscience of France with his commitment to the poorest of the poor. He died in 2007 at the age of 94.
