Landl Rally in Meggenhofen will not take place again until 2025

The penultimate weekend in August is approaching – Upper Austria’s classic car enthusiasts are immediately thinking of the Landl Rally in Meggenhofen. The event is considered a highlight in the scene, with up to 1,000 historic vehicles on display there every year – at least that has been the case so far.

The event team from the parish of Meggenhofen has decided to only hold the rally every two years in the future. “There were several reasons – the most serious of which is probably the huge effort involved,” says Josef Mallinger, who has been a co-organizer for more than thirty years.

“We want to maintain standards”

Around 100 volunteers are working to prepare the event and ensure that it runs smoothly. “It’s a lot of work. We have now agreed on a two-year cycle in order to maintain the high standard and continue to improve it,” says Mallinger.

The rally was initiated by the now deceased “Maserati priest” Manfred Brandl – it was also the largest parish festival in the region and an important source of income for the parish of Meggenhofen. “This year we organized a parish festival with a duck rally, so we still came up with something,” says the co-organizer. There are currently no major investments planned. Of course, the rally always carries a certain amount of risk, says Mallinger: “When the weather is good, a really nice sum is raised, when the weather is bad it’s around a third.”

At classic car events, he is often asked about the new event schedule, says Mallinger: “Many people think it’s a shame, but they understand our reasons. And next year it will continue – we are definitely looking forward to it again. It will continue as usual.”
