The opposition will meet in plenary this week to finish defining its position regarding the plebiscite on social security driven by the PIT-CNT and which will be voted on in the month of October in the general elections, a situation that makes the Broad Front (FA) in the face of pressure to define a position.
The debate over whether or not to support the initiative of the trade union centre dates back to the end of last year when, after the announcement of freedom of action for the political representatives of the party, several spoke out for and against the plebiscite. In this way, the FA had decided to limit the common structures of the coalition, leaving freedom of action limited to each political space of the coalition in particular.
However, the initiative was realized and today the PIT-CNT is campaigning for a “YES” vote in the October elections. Faced with this, the Frente Amplio plenary decided to meet this week to determine how to proceed.
“The FA must be consistent with what was resolved in the first instance,” said the Frente Amplio senator, Jose Carlos Mahiato Informativo Uruguay. “It is unprecedented for the Frente Amplio to give its parties and supporters free rein to act on such a significant issue,” he added.
However, he spoke about the criticism of the National Party regarding the FA’s position and recalled that they are not always in agreement either. “There was no general statement in the PN on the Live Without Fear campaign, which was promoted by a nationalist sector; there were whites who supported it and others who did not, and nothing happened,” he commented.
The Mahía sector, Sergeants, He was against the initiative from the beginning, and therefore refused to help with the collection of signatures. “It does not seem logical that now, it is decided that those who collected signatures should take a position against it, nor should those of us who reject the plebiscite route now support it,” he stressed.
Issues to be resolved
Before the primaries, the candidate for vice president of the Republic, Carolina Cosse, had spoken out in favour of the plebiscite, a statement he repeated again after the election results in June. Meanwhile, his running mate, Yamandú Orsi, He had assured that he did not share the method chosen by the PIT-CNT to carry out the changes in the social security reform approved two years ago.
It is in this context that the Broad Front The main opposition force meets next week, specifically on Monday. In the meantime, doubts arise regarding the possibility that some sectors within the party Broad Front They are carrying out a campaign against the approval of the plebiscite, which would show the lack of unity within the political force, something they have been fighting for since the electoral campaign began.
Meanwhile, the meeting will also determine the procedure for distributing ballots for the “YES” vote in the plebiscite, a method that has proven to be essential when submitting this type of initiative to a public vote, and which could generate suspicions within the different Frente Amplio sectors.
An awkward situation
Earlier this month, Yamandú Orsi’s team admitted that the situation of the PIT-CNT plebiscite puts the Frente Amplio in a difficult situation. This was admitted by the senator and campaign manager, Alejandro Sanchez.
“It is a great challenge for the Frente Amplio campaign because it was decided to go to this plebiscite with freedom of action. This means that there are sectors and comrades who support the reform and sectors and comrades who do not support the reform,” he admitted.
Regarding the public demand from the political sector for the front to take a position, Sánchez admitted that they are in a dilemma. “We are in an uncomfortable situation because, on the one hand, we have the government that supports its reform and puts it before the PIT-CNT and on the other hand, this Broad Front which puts itself in a different position from that of the government and the PIT-CNT”, He commented and added that the FA does not share the union’s ballot because of the content it contains.
