According to the report, the driver lost control at high speed at the Dortmund/Unna motorway junction in the direction of Kassel. The car shot off the road, tore up several trees due to the force of the impact and immediately burst into flames, according to Dortmund police.
“The two passengers, who have not yet been clearly identified, burned to death,” the report states. The fire department assisted witnesses and first responders at the scene of the accident who had to watch the incident. The driver of the second car involved in the alleged race fled.
Man was arrested
A 39-year-old was arrested that night. He is suspected of having been involved in the race, the police said. The investigation is ongoing. Numerous traces of the accident were seen until the early hours of the morning and are being evaluated – as is data from the on-board electronics, said a spokesman. While the accident was being investigated, the A44 was temporarily closed in both directions. The slip road to the A1 in the direction of Cologne was also affected. The road is now open again.
