The Pulvermühlbach flood retention basin with a retention volume of 70,000 cubic meters was officially opened yesterday. A total of 2.1 million euros were invested, shared between the federal government (62 percent), the Aschachtal flood protection association (22 percent), the state of Upper Austria (15 percent) and the Upper Austrian infrastructure department (1 percent).
99 buildings flooded
The district of Seebach in the municipality of Hinzenbach and the Stroheimer Landesstraße were repeatedly affected by flooding (1978, 2002 and 2008), most recently in 2009, when the district and the state road were flooded. At that time, 86 residential buildings and outbuildings, eight agricultural and forestry buildings and five commercial buildings were affected. The total damage at that time amounted to more than 3.8 million euros.
The project was implemented by the torrent and avalanche control authority, in whose area of responsibility there are only three other retention basins of comparable size. “Each of these structures means the highest level of safety and quality of life for the residents,” says State Councilor for Infrastructure Günther Steinkellner (FP). Retention basins reduce the flood peak and delay the flood runoff.
In Hinzenbach, 1300 cubic metres of concrete and 128 tonnes of steel were used. The dam is 106 metres long and 10.7 metres high.
