At around 12.40 p.m. the alarm “major watercraft fire” came in. Six fire departments were dispatched. A short time later the Ebensee and Traunkirchen fire departments and the local water rescue teams were also alerted.
According to Commander Gerald Kahrer of the Gmunden Fire Department, the fire broke out in the engine room. The police provided further details: There was apparently a short circuit on the main terminal of the power generator. The defect in the power supply for the on-board electrical system then led to heavy smoke development in the engine room.
Passenger raised alarm
A passenger noticed the smoke and raised the alarm. The liner was just about to dock at the Hoisnwirt pier. The crew was able to extinguish the fire with a foam extinguisher, according to the police. The ship’s propulsion was not affected by the short circuit. The passengers were able to leave the ship unharmed.
Accompanied by a fire brigade boat, the excursion boat was taken to the Weyer pier for repairs.
