Within 24 hours, twelve fires broke out, which 1,120 firefighters fought in hours of hard work. “I don’t know what happened that day, but it was brutal,” said Markus Voglhuber from the State Fire Brigade Association (LFV) in the afternoon. At that time, the follow-up work on several major fires was still underway. The comrades were busy extinguishing the last embers well into the night.
St. Thomas am Blasenstein, fire in the hay store: It was one of the biggest fires of yesterday, breaking out at three o’clock in the morning in a hay storage facility in the Perg district. “When we arrived at the scene, the outbuilding was already fully ablaze,” says Victor Vogelsang, press spokesman for the Perg district command.
22 fire brigades with around 250 firefighters were able to rescue the 60 cows from the barn and a large part of the living area, but the farm wing burned out completely. The strong wind encouraged sparks to fly, but the fire was prevented from spreading to the outbuildings. Due to the remote location, the water supply was a challenge. “Ten jet pipes need an average of 4,000 litres per minute,” explains Voglhuber. 15 neighbouring farmers therefore brought the extinguishing water in liquid manure tanks. “That made our work a lot easier,” says Vogelsang.
