The president of the Chamber of Commerce and Services of Uruguay (CCSUy), Julio Cesar Lestidorecalled the harsh impact that the price gap between Argentina and Uruguay during 2023, due to the exchange rate difference with the neighboring country, something that caused real exoduses of Uruguayans crossing international bridges to make their purchases on the other side of the Uruguay River.

In the last few hours, the leader lamented in a press conference the consequences that the exchange rate situation in Argentina had for the country, and stated that during that time “Uruguayans lived here, but consumed on the Argentine side.”
“It was a very hard blow, we would say it in some way, the Uruguayan lived here but consumed on the Argentine side. It wasn’t just that I went to Argentina to get gas or buy something, but sometimes I came back with the supplies,” Lestido said.
“That range is for the whole month, and I don’t buy here. Services on the Argentine side were used, from hairdressers, dentists, doctors, opticians, celebrating birthdays, everything you can imagine,” he added.
CCSUy is concerned about border policies with Brazil
On the other hand, the CCSUy reiterated its concern about border policies and current legislation around border towns with Brazil.
On this, the president of the Cerro Largo Commercial and Industrial Center, Andres Martinezsaid that his department has “some very important points” in this regard that have been worked on for some time as a “small solution.”
