Dairy exports grew 25% year-on-year in July

Despite the sharp decline in imports from Brazil, the dairy sector managed to export a total of 67 million dollars last month.

With the boost of purchases of Algeria and despite the decline in purchases of Brazil, he dairy sector finally received good news in July through the 25% year-on-year increase in exports in volume, representing a total of 67 million dollars that entered the Uruguay.

The amount represented a year-on-year increase of 17% during the past month, while the 25% increase corresponds to the volume exported during July. In this sense, during the same month but in 2023, a total of 15,386 tons had been exported for 57.4 million dollars, with Brazil being the main buyer of Uruguayan dairy products, followed by Algeria.

So far in the eight months of the year, the country has exported 126,233 tons of dairy for a total of 435.3 million dollars. Compared to last year, this represents an increase of 1.7% compared to the 124,072 tons in the same period last year. However, this year’s period represented a 9% decrease compared to the previous year, since by then a total of 480.4 million dollars had been accumulated.

Brazil loses the podium to Algeria

The retraction of purchases by Brazil led to it occupying second place as an export destination, leaving the first place to Algeria. In this way, the African country bought 6,904 tons for a value of 24.8 million dollars, a big difference compared to last year where Uruguay was able to sell only 1,754 tons worth 6.4 million dollars.

Meanwhile, Brazil came in second place with 5,193 tons for 18.4 million dollars compared to 7,830 for 32.4 million dollars last year. This meant a sharp decline of 34% in relation to the exported volume and 43% in relation to the turnover compared to July 2023. This was followed by Chili, Saudi Arabia, Philippines and China but far below.

Despite having lost the podium during the month of July, the neighboring country remains the main buyer of dairy products from Uruguay with a total of 46,003 tons for 161.2 million dollars so far this year. Algeria, for its part, has purchased a total of 29,744 tons for 104 million dollars.
