The controversy surrounding Battalion 14
A few weeks ago, the Patria o Muerte group was denounced by the Canelones Municipality for threats and defamation following a statement by the group in which they opposed the handover of Battalion 14 to human rights associations, a proposal that had been launched by the departmental chief, Marcelo Metediera.
The group resorted to threats against the Municipality of Cannelloni, after Metediera proposed appropriating the military complex. “We also say to all the corrupt leftists in the Canelones Municipality and to the professional politicians that we will not give in an inch, if they want war they will have it, and this time we will not take prisoners,” announced the statement from the right-wing group.
Faced with this, the department decided to file a complaint for threats and defamation. “The fight against impunity for crimes against humanity committed in the recent past in Uruguay, as well as the work for memory, truth and justice carried out by the Canelones Municipality, is a priority public policy” for the departmental government,” states a statement from the municipality.
“The mayor’s office will not admit any action that implies a risk to democracy and the full functioning of the rule of law, a fundamental capital that not only the population of the department of Cannelloni, but all the Uruguay”, adds.
In this regard, during his last visit to Battalion 14, the mayor stressed the importance of moving forward with the complaint. “It cannot be ignored as just another communiqué. There were threats, there were complaints. Let it be investigated and do what needs to be done,” he commented. “In a democratic country, these things cannot be ignored,” he added.
