The President Luis Lacalle Pou He got back into the campaign for the 2024 elections by targeting the candidate again Broad Front, Yamandú Orsi, for his decision not to attend debates where more than one presidential candidate from the ruling party is present.
“One can go through life without speaking, without making a commitment and without debating,” Lacalle Pou said during an activity in Paysandú, questioning the former mayor of Canelones although without naming him, in the middle of the two electoral contests facing October.
“One can go on without saying anything. Obviously, when one speaks and makes a commitment, one is a slave to those words,” countered the president, and fired: “I don’t understand any other way of being in political activity than by making a commitment, because otherwise, how could I ask for their vote if I came and didn’t tell them what I was going to do?”
This is the second time in 15 days that the president has elliptically criticized Orsi. The previous time was on July 30 during an event of the Union of Exporters of Uruguay (UEU), in the midst of a barrage of questions from the ruling party against the Frente Amplio for not attending debates against the four candidates of the coalition.
“I wasn’t one of the best students, but when I didn’t go to an exam and I acted like a jerk, it was because I had ruined almost all the balls,” Lacalle Pou joked at the time.
