Pablo Mieres proposed that the ruling party candidates unite against the PIT-CNT plebiscite

The candidate of the Independent Party (PI), Pablo Mieres, He called for the creation of a specific coordination area with the other presidential candidates, aimed at working together to oppose the plebiscite that seeks to repeal the social security reform.

Mieres questioned the “great threat” represented by the campaign that promotes the PIT-CNT along with organizations and political sectors, speaking at the opening of the cycle of presidential candidates who will participate until the next elections in October in the traditional lunch of the Marketing Managers Association, where he also gave his vision on topics related to employment and the security.

In this context, the Former Minister of Labor and Social Security He said: “We are going to propose to the coalition parties a specific area of coordination to work together and in a coordinated manner on a campaign that will ensure that this plebiscite fails.”

“Our priority is for our country to once again be a country in which everyone believes that the path to social advancement is through education and work. It is possible to rebuild the conviction in our citizens, and particularly among the youngest and most vulnerable, that the education and the job “They are the virtuous path to social and economic growth and advancement,” said the IP candidate.

An election of continuity or change

In political matters, he said that in the October elections “the question is whether the current ruling coalition continues to govern or whether the “Broad Front”, although the weight that each party would have in case the coalition is re-established is also defined. “We have shown that we are a responsible party, with an outstanding and productive performance,” said Mieres.

And he stressed: “We had to co-govern and we did it successfully, with loyalty, with responsibility and without blemishes. And I want to highlight each of those four characteristics: success, with loyalty, responsibility and without question. The comrades of the Independent Party have left a lasting impression. positive footprint. We have grown and demonstrated that we are a co-governing party with the capacity to carry out different public policies.”

“The main issue is the continuity of the process of change or the return of a Broad Front that represents a setback and a blow to progress,” Mieres insisted.

Security and night raids

“Of course this party is in favour of lifting the ban on night raids. Unfortunately, this measure, which is in the Constitution and therefore the only way to change it is through a plebiscite, it is absolutely essential. There are houses that have become dens of crime, protected by the fact that the police do not act at night,” said Mieres, expressing his support for the initiative of a popular consultation that emerged from some legislators of the National Party.

“We do not understand why the Frente Amplio has decided to oppose this plebiscite. Being against lifting the ban on night raids today is a lack of sensitivity to what is happening and ultimately, it is maintaining protection over places that stop being homes and become “a refuge for criminals” the independent leader vehemently questioned.

He also gave his opinion on the initiative of Open Council leader Guido Manini Ríos to declare the security emergency. “The question that needs to be asked is what concrete measures, in addition to those that we are all saying, which more or less coincide, should be taken. And of course, I share with Manini, without a doubt, the concern to resolve the security problem that I believe is shared with the rest of the coalition, beyond whether you call it an emergency or not,” Mieres clarified.

Reduction of working hours

On the initiative of reduction of working hours to six hours proposed in recent days by the PIT-CNT, Mieres linked it to agreements productivity. “The demands that are being made today for a reduction in the working day do not make sense without productivity gains, which are sustained by the loss of jobs or the collapse of many businesses,” he said.

And he stressed: “In the sectors of activity in Uruguay where they have been reduced working hours, “They have been made on that basis. The issue of beverages, for example, was an agreement between the union and companies in which the reduction of the working day is tied to meeting certain productivity indicators. We must not put the cart before the horse because if not, we run the risk, we run the risk of all the employers and the workers because they are the ones who lose their jobs,” he said.

In addition, Mieres announced that the Independent Party will promote the creation of a specific unemployment insurance for self-employed workers. “We want to promote legislation that gives self-employed workers, those who invoice as sole proprietors, a subsidy for cessation of activity. We are willing to promote a law that establishes a subsidy for cessation of activity equivalent to unemployment insurance,” he announced.
