Pedro Bordaberry seems to have returned to the political scene with strength and many things to say. In that sense, and while he gathers support to present himself as a leader in a single list Senate, the leader of the Colorado Party He made a critical assessment of the security management of the current government, which his party is part of as part of the coalition: “The situation we inherited from the “Broad Front”.
The security policy It is a main issue in the campaign, not only because the electoral debate takes place in parallel with the search for support for the plebiscite to enable the night raids; but because it is the main concern of Uruguayans constantly, and in a context in which, although official crime figures maintain a downward trend, the violence of these crimes seems to go in the opposite direction.
In this regard, Bordaberry questioned the security policy applied by the Frente Amplio during its three governments (2005-2020) in dialogue with Subrayado, but also pointed out the debt of the current administration headed by the president Luis Lacalle Pou.
“We had a 15-year decline, and you remember that I raised my hand in the Parliament 200 times warning, ‘let’s change, we’re going to get into trouble’. I questioned, I presented projects, and they never paid attention to me. And they told us ‘no, we don’t have a security problem, it’s just a thermal sensation’. They told us ‘we don’t have a security problem, we’re doing things right’, and we went as we went,” recalled the leader of Let’s go Uruguay.
Regarding the current situation, he considered: “In this government the deterioration was stopped but the situation we inherited from the Broad Front was not improved, and what we have to do is improve it, and for that a single party is not enough, the only one is not enough. Republican Coalition, because the thief who steals from you doesn’t ask you who you vote for.” “What we have to ask ourselves is why this is happening, why is it happening to us,” he added, regarding the recent episodes of gun violence, and referred to the so-called “Plan Colombia”, when USA, Between 2004 and 2005, “he put $5 billion into Colombia to combat drug trafficking.”
For Bordaberry that “worked”, but the consequence was that drug trafficking moved south, reaching Buenos Aires and from there to Uruguay. “And what did the Frente Amplio government tell us then? ‘No, we are at most a refuge for drug traffickers. They choose to hide here.’ It wasn’t like that. Then they told us that we are a transit point for drugs, and today we have drugs and gunfire in North Hill through the mouths of the base paste. In other words, the Frente Amplio minimized what was happening and cannot say that we did not tell them,” he said.
Regarding what the current government has done in terms of security, the Colorado leader responded critically: “The growth of these crimes has been stopped, the growth that was taking place, but it is not enough.”
Colorado support for the Senate
Meanwhile, Bordaberry continues to gain support within the party ahead of the October elections to head a single list, the List 10; but also to consolidate himself as the next leader of the Colorados, disputing the place of the presidential candidate – and winner of the primaries – Andres Ojeda. Now, the arrival of the former minister of Tourism and former candidate Tabare Viera and, with it, an important sector of Batllists.
Following the announcement of the agreement with the historic List 15 from the hand of the former president of Antel and also a former presidential candidate, Gabriel Gurméndez, and with a sector of Ciudadanos – who broke away, at the level of the candidacies for Senate, of Grow, the umbrella that brings together the support of Robert Silva—; This Wednesday the alliance of Batllistas with Let’s go Uruguay from the addition of Viera to Bordaberry’s campaign. And, possibly, also to the single list.
In this regard, Bordaberry pointed out the management of Viera and the Colorado Party in the Intendancy of Rivera as “a successful experience”, which in his opinion “is an example to follow”, as he pointed out in a press conference. With the former Minister of Tourism, other referents of Batllism also arrived on List 10, such as German Coutinho, Walter Verri, Tabare Hackenbruch and Adrian Juri.
For his part, Viera highlighted the Vamos Uruguay leader as a “leader” and a “great politician,” and highlighted his characteristics of “honesty, hard work and intelligence.”
In the current list of List 10, headed by Bordaberry, Gurméndez would be the first substitute while Viera would occupy the second place, with Coutinho as the substitute.
