“I want to show people that the Ried clubs are currently having an even harder time than they have had in recent years,” said Peter Prokop at an appointment with the OÖN. Prokop has been on the board of ASKÖ Ried since 2012, and has been chairman of the club with around 380 members for five years.
The funding cuts by the municipality are very noticeable. But the 42-year-old is really annoyed about the situation of the club’s own artistic gymnastics section. “For many years, our artistic gymnasts were able to use the so-called network hall in the exhibition center three times a week for training purposes. We pay for electricity and gas ourselves. In autumn 2023, we were then told that we would have to cover 30 percent of the costs ourselves. That would be between 3,000 and 4,000 euros per year. That is simply not affordable for a club like ASKÖ Ried,” says Prokop. The consequence was that the artistic gymnastics group disbanded due to the lack of training opportunities. “Some joined our Turn10 group, a precursor to artistic gymnastics, but most moved to other clubs, which I can understand,” says the club chairman.
