Education cannot be fixed without money

The candidate for the National Party, Alvaro Delgado, He defended his education plan that establishes a bonus for those fifth and sixth year students who finish high school and are within the poorest sectors of the country. Uruguay and assured that the education it can’t be fixed without money.

During a campaign event, The politician questioned the criticism from experts and the opposition. “Obviously it is a bonus with money. Yes, gentlemen, a bonus with money and it is a concrete, direct stimulus,” he said.

“Yesterday I was surprised, I heard about the commodification of education. Look, gentlemen, education cannot be fixed without money,” he said, adding: “But it is clear that until now there have been no results. If we do not try different things, we will not have different results.”

Orsi urged Delgado: “Do it now”

After the plan was presented, the first person to take advantage of the opportunity to question the project was the main rival within the campaign: Yamandú OrsiThe presidential candidate of the Frente Amplio questioned Delgado’s promise that they would carry out the plan if they came to power.

“If we get to the government, he says… I would like them to do it now that they are in government,” he questioned. “If he proposes it, it is because he knows the costs that he has. Someone who was in the Secretariat of the Presidency knows,” added Orsi about the eventual investment and insisted that it is necessary “to put it to the president so that he can begin.”

Criticisms from specialists

Several education experts were against Delgado’s project. “It does not have a sustained impact on learning. And the problem of Uruguay is that graduation has to be a result of achieving learning,” he said. Renato Opertti, professor of UCU specialized in Education, to Telemundo.

“It is the young people themselves who have to feel motivated and committed to what they do, and it is not through monetary means that we achieve this,” he stressed.

In this sense, he added that the importance lies in the quality of the education offered. “We achieve this by giving them an educational proposal that they love, that enchants them, that stimulates them, that they can connect knowledge, that they can connect attitudes, skills, interests. Naturally, some kind of support incentive can be thought of, but the central thing is not that incentive; the central thing is the quality of the educational proposal,” he assured.

For his part, the president of the National Institute for Educational Evaluation (INEED), Javier Lasida, He commented that money is not enough for young people to finish their studies. “I believe that money is not enough for educational continuity under any circumstances; the educational system, the educational center, needs to first generate a relevant proposal for the students; second, mechanisms of accompaniment and support for those students who have more difficulties, and who are eventually receiving this financial support as an incentive to continue their education,” he explained.
