Two mountaineering friends, a 54-year-old from Burgenland and a 53-year-old from Lower Austria, wanted to take advantage of the fantastic weather on Saturday for a trip to the mountains.
The challenging tour, which covered more than 1,500 meters of altitude, started early in the morning. At 4:30 a.m. the two alpinists set off from the valley station of the Dachstein Hunerkogel cable car in Ramsau. They reached the Hallstatt Glacier via the Anna Klettersteig and the Johann Klettersteig. They then continued on the shoulder climb and at around 1 p.m. the mountaineers reached the summit of the Hoher Dachstein at an altitude of 2,995 meters.
The serious accident occurred during the descent. The two had chosen the “Randkluft descent”, which leads over very steep, glaciated and partly icy terrain with open crevasses. After the Lower Austrian had jumped over an open crevasse in the upper area, it was his companion’s turn. However, she slipped just next to the crevasse and slid about 25 meters across the glacier.
