The first away match of the new season took the Steinbach Black Wings to Nuremberg on Sunday afternoon. Head coach Philipp Lukas also used personnel rotation against the Ice Tigers from the DEL. Graham Knott returned to the lineup after his break, while Brian Lebler, Shawn St-Amant and Gerd Kragl were given a break. Nico Feldner and Emil Romig, two other regular players, also had to take a break due to illness. Youngsters Raffael Aigner and Mathias Haiböck were given ice time in their place.

Nuremberg took the lead
Linz started ambitiously in Nuremberg: Niklas Würschl and Graham Knott failed early on with their first opportunities. The hosts then took control of the game, but Linz repeatedly countered dangerously. Jakob Mitsch, Raffael Aigner and again Graham Knott failed with their attempts. On the other side of the ice, Rasmus Tirronen saved twice against Charlie Gerard. In the 8th minute, however, the Linz goalkeeper was powerless against a wrist shot from Cole Maier. The home team continued to play after that, but Linz had another chance in the first period while outnumbered: Niklas Bretschneider was on the run on the counterattack, but was caught by goalie Treutle with a spectacular hook.
