The emergency services came across the men one after the other around midnight and shortly after 1 a.m., but after hours of searching and rescue work, the emergency doctor could only confirm their deaths, press officer Markus Oppitz told the APA on Wednesday morning. Another worker had previously freed himself from the rubble.

The two deceased were two 23-year-old Syrian citizens, said Oppitz, referring to police information. After the discovery, it took until the early hours of the morning before the bodies were finally recovered. The work was further complicated by the acute danger of the building collapsing, explained district fire chief Markus Furtner in response to an APA inquiry.
