What are the best and worst space movies according to NASA workers?
The best
- Mars (2015): Allison McIntyne, NASA’s Chief Mockup Facility, said the film accurately portrays astronaut life, emphasizing the anguish and challenges faced in that environment.
- Apollo 13 (1995): Mission Control flight director Emily Nelson and ISS astronaut Karen Nyberg highlighted the film’s accuracy in depicting the space flight experience.
- Star Trek (Saga since 1979): Despite its fanciful approach, professionals such as Tori Wills and Misty Snopkowski highlighted the saga as a source of inspiration for their careers at NASA.
The worst
- Armageddon (1998): NASA flight director Emily Nelson criticized the film for being inaccurate and portraying the space agency in a negative light.
- Planet of the Apes (1968): Subashini Iyer, lead engineer for the CST-100 Starliner spacecraft, criticized it for being slow and making her want to sleep every time she watches it.
- Spaceball (1987): It was singled out by Regina Spellman, from the launch program, as the worst film for being “too cheesy.”
