Landslides, floods, power outages: warning for Upper Austria

It will continue to rain until Sunday night. During Friday, the intensity of the rain will increase from the east, with the heaviest rainfall expected between Friday evening and Saturday evening. During the night into Sunday, the rain will then ease significantly and even stop completely in the western parts of the country. On Sunday afternoon, however, the rain will become more intense again in the east.

By midnight on Sunday – when the rainfall is expected to decrease noticeably – 50 to 120 mm of rain is expected in many areas. The least precipitation will fall in the Innviertel, while up to 200 mm of rain is possible in the southern mountains, particularly in the northern areas of the Salzkammergut and the Pyhrn-Priel region.

Snow line drops to 800 meters

The snow line will drop to around 800 metres overnight and early Saturday morning, which could reduce runoff in the worst-affected areas. However, snow breakage may occur at altitudes above 1,000 metres, which could affect traffic and power lines. In addition, Friday afternoon will bring gale-force winds with gusts of up to 70 km/h.

Increased danger

There is an increased risk of mudslides and landslides, flooding of buildings and agricultural land. Small and medium-sized watercourses could also overflow their banks. Regional disruptions to road and rail traffic as well as to energy supplies are also to be expected.
