“Ozapft is” only in autumn: No summer Oktoberfest in Münch

An intergroup committee made up of city councilors and representatives of the administration decided on Friday, said festival director Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU). “The Wiesn stays where it is, when it is and how it is.” As planned, it should be called “Ozapft is” on September 17th – if the pandemic allows it. In 2021, the festival area on the Theresienwiese remained empty, just like the year before.

According to Baumgärtner, the final decision on this year’s date should be made in early May. It is already clear that – if there is an Oktoberfest – only those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered should have access. The committee underlined this on Friday, said Baumgärtner. Experts are currently working on how the controls could actually take place – for example digitally via an app. The main arguments against relocating the Wiesn were organizational reasons. “A move disenchants the Wiesn and takes away its character. It’s not like a pop concert that you can simply postpone,” said Baumgärtner.
