“After consulting the emergency doctor and the Red Cross, we managed to gain access to the injured man through the front of the vehicle so that he could receive medical treatment,” says the head of operations and commander of the Marchtrenk fire brigade, Thomas Fraungruber. The emergency services then began to free the man. “Due to the severe deformation, it was very difficult to get the injured man out,” says Fraungruber. The passenger side was compressed to the point of zero. This made rescue difficult, “we had few starting points.” After about 40 minutes, the injured man was rescued from the demolished vehicle.

After receiving emergency medical treatment, the man was taken to hospital by ambulance. Cooperation between the emergency services is very important in situations like these: “It’s all about working together – everyone has to do their job for the benefit of the injured person,” says the commander.

Debriefing of the demanding mission

The A25 was closed during the operation and clean-up work. The Marchtrenk fire brigade supported Asfinag with the work so that the first lane could be opened to traffic, then they moved in.

In the fire station, there was a joint debriefing of the demanding operation. Everyone is doing well at the moment, but everyone reacts differently to bad situations. That’s why the fire department has specially trained members to deal with stress. “We’ve made this offer available to everyone. If someone is having trouble coping, they can get in touch at any time – then the team will come.”
