This Sunday, October 6, the local elections for mayors and councilors in the 5,569 municipalities that are within Brazil. The latest polls indicate a possible triple tie in said city, between the current mayor, Ricardo Nunesfrom the Brazilian Democratic Movement (Mdb); Guillermo Boulosfrom the Socialism and Freedom Party (Psol); and Pablo Marçala businessman from the Brazilian Labor Renewal Party (Prtb).

Among the three candidates, the leftist Boulos has a small advantage, with 26%followed by Nunes –supported by former president Jair Bolsonaro- and Marçal, with 24% each. By presenting a margin of error of 2% in the pollster, the chances of the aforementioned tie increase, taking into account the three-point setback that the current mayor suffered last week.

Marçal is the big surprise of the municipal elections, since the other two candidates are supported by the two largest political forces in the South American country. With exceptional management of social networks, he presents himself as an esuccessful entrepreneur who wants to end traditional politics. This has caused many Bolsonaro politicians to lean more towards him, since they see him as someone more committed to the far-right agenda.

In fact, on his website, he listed a list of reasons for residents to vote for him: 1) he does not depend on politics to live; 2) it is the change that Saint Paul needs; 3) does not use public money; 4) is not part of the system; 5) cares about the people; 6) started from scratch; 7) has the energy that no other candidate possesses.

Completing the electoral options in San Pablo are the socialist Tabata Amaral, with 11%; José Luiz Datena, of the Social Democratic Party (PSDB), with 4%; and finally, Marina Helena, from Novo, with 2%.

Another of its main cities, Rio de Janeirohas clearer numbers, but not certain: the current mayor and ally of President Lula da Silva, Eduardo Paes, dropped the lead from 59% to 54% over the candidate supported by Bolsonaro, Alexandre Ramagem, who rose from 17% to 22 %, according to the consulting firm Datalfolha.
