If you want to walk or cycle from the Nibelungen Bridge to the Lower Donaulände, you either have to take the circuitous route via the east bridgehead building or take the narrow and outdated path at the end of the bridge with a zebra crossing. With several road users, space quickly becomes limited.
- More on the topic: Nibelungen Bridge cycle path is postponed to April
In order to improve the situation, the city wants to build a 3.76 meter wide ramp directly from the bridge to the cycle path and sidewalk on the Lower Donaulände. The slim structure is supported by V-shaped supports, the railing is discreet and the handrail is equipped with LED lighting – according to the design. Drivers will also benefit from the project, because the zebra crossing on the Untere Donaulände will be closed, says Deputy Mayor Martin Hajart (VP). He sees the project as the next step after the car-free main square, which, as reported, will be a reality from October 28th. “In both cases it’s about being more pedestrian-friendly,” says Hajart.
The federal and state governments also pay
The committee will deal with it on October 22nd and the local council on November 7th.
Pedestrians are also important on the opposite side of the Danube. The ramp at the Ars Electronica Center (AEC) is to be widened from 2.5 to around 3.5 meters and thus become safer. Cost: 700,000 euros gross. The new ramp on the Linz side costs three million euros gross, of which the city and state each cover a third. The federal government should pay for the remaining third through climate active funding.
