The Government called the Malvinas Islands Falklands in a statement

The Ministry of Defensepublished this Wednesday a release where called the Malvinas Islands “Falklands”just as Great Britain does. The “error” occurred in a text about the meeting that the chancellor had Diana Mondino with Gilles Carboniervice president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to discuss the resumption of a humanitarian project to identify remains of Argentine combatants who fell during the 1982 war.

In it release they had named “Falklands/Malvinas Islands” when they explained that the meeting had the objective of resuming negotiations on the Third Plan of the Humanitarian Project, aimed at identifying the Argentine combatants who fell in the Islands “during the South Atlantic conflict of 1982.”

When the criticism began, they corrected the statement erasing Falklands from the text. Later, they directly deleted it from the official website of the Ministry of Defense.

No one from the Government came forward to clarify if it was an error or if it was a statement agreed upon with the International Red Cross delegation. Carbonier said in his X account that he visited our country for the XVI Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas, but did not mention the content of the meeting with Mondino.

Repudiations of the statement

After the Government’s mention of Malvinas as “Falklands” went viral, repudiation from different political sectors began to be expressed. From the UCR to Unión por la Patria (UP).

He national senator of the UCR through Tierra del Fuego, Pablo Blancocriticized the statement issued by Defense. “That a statement says ‘the fallen in the Falklands Islands’ It seems to me a lack of respect for Argentines“, he questioned during a plenary session of the Foreign Relations and Infrastructure commissions.

The former chancellor during the Frente de Todos and today a deputy for UP, Santiago Cafierodescribed it as “handover of sovereignty”. On his X account, he harshly criticized the statement. “Milei and Mondino first said they respected the wish of the islanders, then they signed a Foradori-Duncan 2 pact and now they directly mention our Malvinas Islands as “Falklands” in official documents. “It is not an error, it is a surrender of sovereignty.”wrote.

They file a criminal complaint against Diana Mondino for an agreement with the United Kingdom on the Malvinas

A month ago the Foreign Minister Diana Mondino agreed with her British counterpart, David Lammy, to advance in negotiations for the resumption of the weekly flight from San Pablo to the Falkland Islandswhich made a monthly stopover in Cordova. This measure is part of a joint agenda on the Islands that both countries will take over.

By this agreement, the chancellor Diana Mondino was denounced for the crime of “failure to fulfill the duties of an official” and “abuse of authority” by the agreement with the United Kingdom.

The criminal complaint was filed by lawyer Valeria Carreras for “not having complied with art 75 of the National Constitution, having ignored the participation of the National Congress.”
