REED. “It’s not all bad and not everything is a drama. Not everyone is starving, especially not in Austria. Yes, there are challenges, but that’s always been the case. Christmas is just around the corner, let’s look forward to it,” said Helmut Slezak, head of Rieder city marketing, yesterday at the start of a press conference. The pre-Christmas program of the city and the Weberzeile shopping center was presented here. The Rieder Advent opens on Thursday, November 21st, at 6 p.m. on the main square. The Christmas tree, which is around 20 meters high and weighs four tons, will also be officially handed over by a large delegation from Kirchdorf am Inn, led by Mayor Josef Schöppl. The traditional “Dietmar-Standln”, which will be set up on a slightly larger area this year, will be open daily until 9 p.m. from November 21st to December 23rd. There are expanded Christmas lights on the Roßmarkt, Stelzhamerplatz and Landshuter Platz.
Nativity trip around the world
The exhibition “It’s Christmas everywhere, a nativity scene trip around the world” will open on November 28th in the Innviertler Volkskundehaus. The exhibition with many works by Gudrun Bauchinger is open until January 18th from Tuesday to Friday (9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.) and on Saturday (2 p.m. to 5 p.m.).
The coming weeks are probably the most important of the whole year for stationary retail. “This time plays a central role in the economic strength of our city,” says Michael Gärner, chairman of the Rieder Economy Association. The Christmas business can already be felt strongly in November, says Christoph Vormair, Center Manager at Weberzeile. “I assume that customers will spend more in brick-and-mortar stores and on gifts in general.” He expects online trading to decline somewhat this year.
