The description of the gray VW Passat Variant on the Dorotheum auction house’s online page didn’t sound particularly promising: the general condition of the five-door car, built in 1984, was stated as “heavily used, damaged”, and it had, among other things, “grazing damage”. In addition, the car was “in need of a thorough overhaul or repair” and was also missing parts, it said. Postscript: “No guarantee for traffic and operational safety”. Nevertheless, a total of 24 interested parties bid for almost two weeks. The auction finally closed on Wednesday at 1 p.m.: Upper Austria’s first “speed car” offered for compulsory auction went under the hammer for 2,000 euros.
