Monday, 1 p.m.: A renovation company has already started work on the first floor of the house at Promenade 3 in Ried, where homeowner Benno Wageneder’s law firm is located. It’s dripping from the ceiling, and Wageneder’s wooden office furniture and desk are protected from the moisture with large plastic sheets. Less than 24 hours have passed since the open roof fire broke out one floor above. “The insurance adjuster will probably come on Tuesday. It can be assumed that a new roof structure will be built,” says Wageneder as he leads the way through his house, which has a total of four apartments.
A fire expert was already on site in the morning, and his report will probably also be important for the Ried public prosecutor’s office. The apartment of a 38-year-old, where sulfur, potassium and black powder were apparently being handled, is completely destroyed. Apart from a completely charred stereo system and a washing machine, almost nothing can be seen; the window panes were destroyed by the pressure wave in the suspected explosion. There are fallen parts and seized containers of potassium nitrate and inorganic sulfur lying around in the courtyard.
