The story began in 2014, with a mistake. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing, which is the state agency in charge of printing dollars, mistakenly manufactured two identical runs of 6.4 million one-dollar bills. That year, the first printing was distributed in New York state. Two years later, another one exactly like it arrived in Washington.
