One-way deposit: uncertainty among consumers

The new one-way deposit regulation will come into force from January 2025.

The one-way deposit system has been in effect in Austria since the beginning of the year. Anyone who buys plastic bottles and metal cans with a deposit logo pays 25 cents as a deposit. The money will be returned if empty containers that have not been crushed are returned.

However, in the first few days there were discussions, incomprehension and uncertainty among a number of customers, reports Josef Strutz, head of the Winkler market and lobbyist for the food trade in the Upper Austrian Chamber of Commerce: “Many have already brought PET bottles and cans onto the market, but no deposit was paid out.” But that couldn’t be the case at all, because the deposited PET bottles and metal cans have only been allowed to be “put into circulation” since January 1st, says Strutz. The containers would be delivered to grocers in the coming days.
