From now on, many Austrians will have to collect deposit bottles or cans if they want to get their money back when the deposit is taken back. Since January 1, 2025, disposable beverage containers made of plastic or metal with a volume of up to three liters have been subject to a deposit of 25 cents.
A national deposit symbol now indicates exactly which beverage packaging should be returned. With take-back machines set up, consumers can now return their empty bottles or cans. The packaging must be in the best possible, uncrushed condition when returned in order to get the deposit amount back. This is what the Austrians say about it:
Liselotte Bachmann (62) & Gabi Schlager (62) from Timelkam
“I’ll let it happen to me. I can’t change it anyway. I think that will be accepted. Of course it will take a while, but just like garbage disposal in general or other returnable bottles, we will get used to it.”
