In the morning hours of this Thursday and in the midst of a large police deployment, the group led by Cruz Cárdenas withdrew peacefully, after the federal judge of Esquel, Guido Otranto, ordered the expulsion from the community.
Mapuches abandoned Los Alerces National Park

Previously, the national government had announced that ““The self-proclaimed Mapuche group led by Cruz Cárdenas will be evicted, which since 2020 has usurped and illegally occupied protected areas of the Los Alerces National Park.”
The news was announced by the portfolio that commands Bullrichin collaboration with the Vice Chief of Staff of the Interior and the National Parks Administration.
In the letter, Nación had clarified that the operation would be carried out by the Federal Forces with the objective of restoring order and guaranteeing unrestricted compliance with the law, after having exhausted all avenues for dialogue.
“The occupation, which includes a section of Park Rangers, has generated conflicts in the area, with verbal and physical attacks on the staff of the National Parks Administration, in addition to serious damage to the property rights of the National State,” the authorities explained.
Likewise, they recalled that the Government decided not to extend Law No. 26,160 on indigenous territorial emergency, which they described as “legislation promoted and supported by previous administrations, which suspended the execution of evictions in territories claimed by certain groups.”
“With this decision, he regains the power to act in defense of property and legal order throughout the national territory, provided that there are firm sentences issued by Justice,” they pointed out.
Finally, the Government reaffirmed “its commitment to respect for the constitutional order, public property and peaceful coexistence.” “With the execution of this operation, we seek to restore legality and guarantee the safety and well-being of all citizens,” ends the text.
Endorsement of Justice
During August of last year, the federal judge of Esquel, Guido Otranto, had already ordered the eviction of that Mapuche community of Los Alerces, in a ruling that was celebrated by both the Nation and the governor of Chubut, Ignacio Torres.
On the occasion, Otranto granted an appeal presented by the National Parks Administration (APN) together with the Chubut State, which demanded the eviction of a group of people including Cruz Cárdenas and Belén Salinas.
