Argentina signed an Open Skies agreement with Qatar

The Government continues with the plan deregulation of the aeronautical sector and this Monday made official a new agreement Open Skies with Qatar. From this understanding, both countries will be able to have a unlimited frequency regime with a broader route schedule and more freedoms of air traffic rights.

The agreement covers international and domestic flights, both passengers and cargo. Previously, the system was restricted to 14 weekly frequencies in combined operations (passenger and cargo), with a route schedule that is also restricted.

This Monday at the San Martín Palace, headquarters of the Chancellery, the Secretary of Transportation, Franco Mogetta signed the agreement with the President of the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority, Mohamed Alhajri.

Argentina advances in air deregulation

The Argentine official celebrated: “We are opening the skies of Argentina, deregulating the sector like never before in historywhich, without a doubt, makes this type of agreement possible and, ultimately, results in better service for users. We come from very different times, where the airline sector in Argentina was completely closed, defending monopolies of state companies was privileged or prioritized. That is no longer the case today.”

At the same time, he considered that “the less intervention there is from the State, the provision of services will always be much more efficient in the hands of private companies.” In that sense, he stressed that the Government’s objective is to bet on a “privatization of the companies that are currently in charge of the State” and noted: “Until that happens in its entirety, we promote healthy competition between State companies and the companies that come to invest from all over the world”.

In relation to the agreement, he highlighted: “We know the importance of Qatar as a HUBwhich is a strategic point to connect with other destinations, and the excellence that its commercial line has,” he added.

Hamad International Airport is the headquarters of the national flag carrier, Qatar Airways, and was positioned as the one with the best connectivity in the Middle East: it will serve 52.7 million passengers in 2024.

For his part, Alhajri highlighted: “Inclusion in this meeting is more than an agreement, it is a symbol of trust and cooperation between our nations.”

In this way, there are now thirteen countries with which this type of agreement was signed, since previously they joined: Brazil, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Canada, Panama, Uruguay, Paraguay, Mexico, Rwanda, Dominican Republic and Ethiopia. Next on the list would be Türkiye.
