“The times when Dart was known as a pure inn are long over,” says Mario Wiggecker from the Dartclub “La Familia” from Braunau. The association was founded in 2013 and is one of the largest in Austria with more than 200 active members.
Accordingly, many Braunauer will be represented at the Electronics Dart State Championships in Ried this coming weekend. “We are expected to provide starters in all competitions, both in singles and in doubles,” says Wibecker. La Familia member Manuel Hafner knows what it feels like to be state champions. He chose state champions two years ago. “Maybe he can repeat this great success in Ried. I trust him,” says Wibecker.
High prize money
The fact that interest in darts sport has been getting bigger for years can be seen in the numerous tournaments that are held almost every weekend. According to Wogecker, there are also more and more clubs that take part in championships. “There are now tournaments in which the winner wave 1,000 euros as a victory premium,” says Wibecker. The state championships, for which more than 1000 starters are expected, is less about money, but rather about the prestige. “Every dart player dreams of being able to call himself state champions. I hope that we can ultimately cheer for a title,” says Wibecker.
Jonas Hager from Gurten has big before. The 23-year-old starts for the “Dartclub Roadrunner” from Utzenaich. His goal: the winning of the state championship title in category A. A difficult undertaking, as Hager emphasizes: “The best players in the country have announced their coming. This will certainly be an exciting competition.”
