VAT is often a sticking point in the election campaign. Only one of the two promising candidates for chancellor excludes an increase. Now a potential coalition partner is expressed.
According to statements by the Chancellor’s candidates in the TV duel, the FDP warns against an increase in VAT after the Bundestag election. “Suddenly the CDU keeps the back door open for tax increases,” criticized parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr. Inflation has already become much more expensive for people. “Now to raise VAT, a slap in the face for the hard-working center and for employees with small incomes that are already difficult,” said Dürr of the German Press Agency.
In the TV duel of “Bild” and “Welt”, only SPD candidate for chancellor Olaf Scholz clearly excluded an increase in VAT. The SPD wants to reduce the reduced VAT rate for food from seven to five percent.
Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz, on the other hand, answered the question of whether he could guarantee that VAT would not be increased: “I do not want to increase the VAT.” On the remarks of the moderators, he does not rule that out, said Merz: “We may also have to lead coalition negotiations.” However, he personally thinks an increase is the wrong way.
Dürr said so that Blinke Merz left the left before the federal election. “It won’t exist with the FDP,” he emphasized. However, it is still completely open whether the FDP will come to the Bundestag at all and would therefore be suitable for a coalition. You can currently see surveys at four to five percent.
