Around 30 other people were injured in the accident near the city of Uyuni, the police said. There are also two children among the fatalities. The two buses collided on a narrow street between the cities of Potosí and Oruro for an unknown cause.
One of the two drivers is said to have been alcoholic. One of the buses was on the way to Oruro, where a carnival festival was celebrated with tens of thousands of guests this weekend. According to the initial knowledge of the police, a bus suddenly changed track and was therefore on the road against the direction of travel. In one of the drivers who was seriously injured, there was suspicion that he was alcoholic. A blood sample was taken from him.
