Albertina Vienna: With da Vinci and Dürer at the gate for painting

“To find the gate of painting, you have to try a special way of drawing: draw on colored paper.” These words come from the book “Libro dell’arte” by the Italian painter Cennino Cennini. They are about 600 years old and yet form the current motto of the “Leonardo – Dürer” show in Albertina Vienna.

If you do not have to introduce Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) and Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), the technology that the show in eight rooms according to the motto, however: it can be read about it that in the early 14th century in Italy “paper and parchment with a mixture of bone powder, glue or rubber water were founded” and the “Brei color” in powder form ”. With a metal pen, spring, brush and chalk, “rich tonal gradations” were achieved.

Everyday life as miracles

What sounds complicated, but at the moment you can see the works. But simply said: The primer that shines in Vienna from gray-violet to ocher colors is the starting point for everything else. Designing her motifs train the feeling for light and shadow, the conditions of details to each other and for the whole, and trains for the strength of meticulousness. The show lustfully infiltrated the concept of the painting genius, many of the light-dark work on display were (pre-) studies for massive paintings that did not automatically flow from the fingers to a Dürer.
