Musik-Privatuni moves to the Otto Wagner area

Students instead of patients: This will apply to the Otto Wagner area in Vienna-Penzing in a few years. The music and art of private university of the city of Vienna (MUK), currently housed at three locations in the capital, will move into buildings in 2030, which had once been built for the healing and nursing home. There are 35 pavilions (formerly a psychiatric hospital and a sanatorium), the MUK will take over 15 of them. The plans for this were recently presented in the Vienna town hall. Mayor Michael Ludwig spoke of the “most attractive Art Nouveau ensemble worldwide”. The area is predestined for a university location, but should also be open to the population. The local supply is to be expanded, and there will also be local. 83 percent of the area are green space: this should not be installed.

During the Nazi era, the area became the “Vienna Center of National Socialist killing medicine”. A permanent exhibition is reminiscent of this today.

The huge property on which the Otto Wagner Church is also located belongs to the city. It is developed or managed by Otto Wagner area Revitalization GmbH, a company of the Vienna-Holding subsidiary WSE. The overall budget is still open, as a first step, 120 million euros were decided for the development of the area a year ago, specifically for infrastructure measures.

According to Muk Rector Andreas Mailath-Pokorny, the three locations of the educational institution in Johannesgasse, Bräunerstraße and Singerstrasse are too small and in need of renovation. There will be more space for rehearsal space on the new campus. A separate practice pavilion is also planned. The MUK is rented at the previous locations, these are abandoned.

The MUK used to be the city’s conservatory and has been a private university since 2005. The focus is on music training. Performing art and dance are also conveyed. 900 people from 60 nations study there. The list of prominent graduates is long: from Nobel Prize winners Elfriede Jelinek to Falco and Marianne Mendt to the actors Verena Altenberger and Nicholas ofczarek.
