Asylum applications: According to the report, Germany is no longer EU leader

According to a media report, Germany is no longer the leaders within the EU for the first time in years in years. This emerges from a report by the “Welt am Sonntag”, citing previously unpublished figures from the Asy Lagstency of the European Union (EuAA), a report on asylum applications marked as confidential in the first quarter of the current year.

According to the report, the leader in the asylum applications between January 1 and March 31st is 40,871 asylum applications. Spain and Germany follow behind it. In Germany, 37,387 asylum applications were available in the first quarter of the year – a decline compared to the same period of the previous year by 41 percent. According to the report, most people seeking protection in the EU and Switzerland and Norway came from Venezuela, followed by asylum seekers from Afghanistan and Syria. Overall, the number of asylum applications from Venezuelans rose by 44 percent in the first quarter of this year. Applications for asylum from Ukrainians, Chinese and Indians also rose sharply. In contrast, people from Syria, Colombia and Turkey applied for significantly less asylum during this period.

As can be seen from the figures, more than every second asylum application by Syrians within the EU, Norway and Switzerland is made in Germany. Overall, a quarter of all asylum applications came from Syrians in Germany, followed by Afghans and Turks. Meanwhile, France has become number one for Ukrainians.
