The secretary of Tourism, Environment and Sports, Daniel Scioli, was appointed this Monday New President of the National High Performance Sports Entity (ENARD)after that Diogenes of Urquizawho held the position since the arrival of the Javier Milei government, will go on to direct the Undersecretariat of Sports.

The official will remain at the head of the body in charge of financing high-performance athletes until the first half of 2025, when there will be a rotation of authorities – as happens every two years – and the presidency will pass to Mario Moccia, head of the Argentine Olympic Committee.

Scioli arrives at ENARD to succeed Diogenes of Urquizaformer Secretary of Sports during Mauricio Macri’s administration, who in turn replaced Julio Garro as Undersecretary of Sports. The latter suffered a scandalous exit from the cabinet after demanding an apology from Lionel Messi following the release of a video of the Argentine national team players singing a song with racist phrases. Hours after making these statements, Garro was forced to resignafter strong criticism on social media, replicated by Javier Milei himself.

What is the function of ENARD?
He ENARD is responsible for financing the daily activities of high-performance Argentine athletes through scholarships.
When the organization was created in 2009, its budget was made up of the 1% of the mobile phone tax. However, this structure changed as a result of a law passed in 2018, when it became dependent on the national budget.
Each athlete receives a scholarship according to his or her performance. There are seven categories: Olympic, Paralympic, Pan American, Parapan American, South American, ParaSouth American, young talents. Within each level, there are also subdivisions. Currently there are more than 1200 high-performance athletes scholarship recipients within the different ENARD programs.
