The $170 million defamation lawsuit against Netflix by Baby Reindeer is headed to trial next year.
On Tuesday, a federal judge set May 6 as the start date for the high-profile lawsuit Fiona Harvey against the streaming platform. The process is estimated to take about two weeks.
Netflix did not comment on the start date of the trial over the Emmy-winning series created by and starring Richard GaadHowever, the company led by Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters reiterated its previous statement that it intends to “vigorously pursue this matter and support Richard Gadd’s right to tell his story.”
The lawsuit against Baby Reindeer
Following the sudden success of the program, Harvey introduced himself and claimed to be the inspiration behind Marthaclaiming the story was inaccurate and filed a $170 million lawsuit against Netflix.
In a lawsuit filed in federal court in Los Angeles, Harvey said Netflix and Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd went too far in suggesting through the series, which calls itself a “true story”that she was a stalker sentenced twice to five years in prison.
Harvey denied harassing Gadd, who plays a fictional version of himself on the show called Donny Dunn, or having been convicted or jailed. He added that many people couldn’t tell the difference, with thousands of Reddit and TikTok users referring to her as the “real” Martha.
Baby Reindeer at the Emmy Awards
The announcement of the trial date comes at a time when Baby Reindeer is nominated for a slew of awards at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday.
Having won Casting and Picture Editing awards at the Creative Arts Emmys over the weekend, Baby Reindeer is in the running with the big boys this coming Sunday. Among its remaining nominations, the show is up for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series and Writing for Gadd himself, as well as Outstanding Supporting Actress for his co-star.
